Various activities ongoing in the Eastern Caribbean

In the Eastern Caribbean (coordinated by the UNICEF Barbados country office),various activities with UNICEF technical and/or financial support were undertaken in Anguilla, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

In Anguilla, church services focused on preventing violence against children.

In Barbados, a capacity building workshop for religious leaders on child abuse prevention and response took place.

In Dominica, UNICEF, together with the Social Development Department, organized a week-long “Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention” campaign that included church communities coming together to oppose violence against children.

In Montserrat, churches focused their services on ending violence against children.

In St. Kitts & Nevis, island-wide church services focused on addressing domestic violence and child abuse.

In St.Vincent  & the Grenadines, activities focused on addressing child abuse and included training sessions, interactive public discussions, radio programming and information dissemination within communities.

In Trinidad & Tobago, a capacity building workshop for evangelical leaders on child abuse prevention and management was held to develop policies for child protection for evangelical churches.

In the Virgin Islands (UK), the government’s Social Development Department, with UNICEF support, used a radio calling programme, “Almanac,” to discuss child abuse and reached out to all churches to focus their religious services on this important issue.
