National Prayer for Children and Introduction on Positive Parenting Workshops

The Jamaica Council of Churches (JCC) executive will send out correspondence to its member churches appealing to all church leaders to pray for children and parents on 20 November and to focus sermons on positive parenting without corporal punishment and other violence. The lyrics for a hymn that was recently written in Jamaica by an overseas minister will be used on this occasion. Further, the Full Gospel Churches will have a day of prayer on that day with planned gatherings in various parishes of the island. The other umbrella church groups are supporting the initiative. In addition, JCC and Parenting Partners of the Caribbean, with support from UNICEF, will use the opportunity of the commemoration to launch a project around 20 November. The JCC will train 120 leaders, selected by faith-based organizations, to conduct parenting workshops across Jamaica to reach 1,200 parents and 3,000 children. The workshops will focus on eliminating corporal punishment and emotional abuse in child-rearing, and on practicing effective positive discipline. Around June 2014, evaluations will inform final workshop materials to be distributed to trained facilitators on the topic of effective discipline.
