Performances of "The Butterflie's Tongue" and the Importance of Education in Timor- Leste

In Timor-Leste, the World Day of Prayer and Action for Children primarily focused on non-violent discipline in schools. The activities were coordinated by the National Commission on the Rights of the Child, with cooperation from UNICEF, in collaboration with religious communities and in particular the Catholic Church (Bishop of the Diocese in Baucau), the National University of Timor-Leste's (UNTL) Theatre Group and MUDA (Association for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights). On 20 November, a church mass with a prayer addressing violence against children was held. In addition, UNICEF supported a high-level debate with the government on ending violence against children in Timor-Leste. Furthermore, starting in October and finishing on 20 November, MUDA and UNTL performed a theatre adaptation of the story ‘La lengua de las Mariposas’ (‘The Butterflies’ Tongue’) for audiences in primary and secondary schools, university Education students and Ministry of Education employees. The high profile story and in turn, the play, correspond to the current educational context in Timor-Leste – the importance of education is underscored and the issue of school violence and its effects on children are highlighted.
