ZAATARI, Jordan, Oct 8 (Reuters) - The United Nations Children's Fund has agreed with the Syrian government to expand humanitarian work across the country in a move that could save tens of thousands of lives, UNICEF chief Anthony Lake said on Monday.

Activists say more than 30,000 people have been killed in the 18-month-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, but with 1 million people displaced the approaching winter poses as much of a threat as the relentless violence.

Fatulmau, East Timor, 27 September 2012 (Jakarta Globe)-  Filomena Mendonca gave birth to all five of her children at home in the village of Fatulmau, high up in the mountains of East Timor, without registering their births.

“The hospital is very far away. I didn’t feel there was a problem so I just stayed at home,” said the 30-year-old mother.
