Planning in Progress for Day of Prayer and Action for Children 2009

In 2008, the Day of Prayer and Action for Children was celebrated by the Global Network of Religions for Children (GNRC) in countries as diverse as Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belgium, Brazil, Ecuador, India, Israel, Jordan, Nepal, Panama, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the United States, Somalia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Tanzania, and Zanzibar.

In 2009, planning is underway by Day of Prayer and Action for Children partners — GNRC, Religions for Peace and UNICEF — in countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Gambia, Jordan, Kenya, Mauritania, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Tanzania, Trinidad Tobago and the United States.

In Sri Lanka, the GNRC is planning a large-scale event for the Day of Prayer and Action for Children, inviting over 600 school children and key speakers from partner organizations including UNICEF, Shanti Ashram and Sarva Dhanam. In Latin America and Africa, the GNRC is planning launch events in Brazil, Kenya and Tanzania respectively. GNRC youth have been active in the planning of Day of Prayer and Action for Children events in Belgium, Sri Lanka and Colombia.

The World Day of Prayer and Action for Children seeks to bring together people of religion and goodwill to safeguard the integrity, rights and dignity of children, and promote their survival, development, protection and wellbeing.
