ChemiChemi Project in Kiberia Slums

The day will be celebrated in partnership with the Center for Rights Education and Awareness (CREAW), Soweto Baptist Primary School, Chemichemi and Arigatou International – Nairobi. The Soweto village in Kibera is among the poorest regions with a large population of children and a high incidence of malnutrition. A small group of children from Soweto and their parents will participate in this innovative program to promote child welfare and positive parenting at the Soweto Baptist Primary School.

Planned WDPAC Activities Highlights:

a) Talk on positive parenting: There will be discussions around positive parenting techniques and information on early child marriage moderated by an expert. The session will also touch on domestic violence and referral information will be provided.

b) Birth registration/Birth certificates info session: A government officer will be present to give the parents information on the importance of getting birth certificates for their children and the processes involved.

c) Talk on early child marriage

d) Children’s activities: Health examinations, treatments, and nutrition supplements will be provided.

e) Devotions and entertainment for children

Agenda

8:30 – 9:15: Arrival and registration

9:15 – 9:45: Introductions

9:45 – 10:15: Devotion and interreligious prayers

10:15 – 10:30: Children and parents will separate into different groups

Parents’ session to include:

• Good parenting
• Early child marriage
• Birth registration
• Q & A session

Children’s session to include:

• De- worming exercise
• Skin infection treatment
• Hemoglobin check

12:30 – 12:45: Votes of thanks from representatives of all partner organizations

12:45 – 13:00: Closing ceremony and photos

Snacks will be provided during the treatment for children and talks with parents sessions. Nutritious porridge flour will also be distributed to the children.
