Panel Discussions on Online Violence Against Children

In both New York City and Tokyo, panel discussions with religious and secular experts will focus on online violence against children. In 2006, a UN study identified five settings where childhood violence takes place: home and family; schools; care and justice institutions; workplaces; and community. Today, the internet is rapidly becoming a sixth distinct setting where children’s rights are violated. Online sexual abuse images of children, especially girls, under the age of 10, and even of toddlers and babies, is on the rise.

The World Day panels will present news and experiences from the United Nations, UNICEF, and religious leaders. Keynote speaker John Carr — a global authority on internet security and online safety for children and young people – will provide expert insights as the World Day explores its response to the critical issue of child abuse online.

Based in London, John Carr is a Senior Expert Adviser to the UN International Telecommunication Union; Expert Adviser to the European NGO Alliance for Child Safety Online (eNACSO) based in Rome; and Secretary of the UK’s Children’s Charities’ Coalition on Internet Safety (CHIS).
