UNICEF Kenya Planned Activities with Religious Communities

As part of the day of prayer and action for children initiative in Kenya, child health action weeks are being planned by religious communities to promote key child survival practices, with a focus on exclusive breastfeeding.  This is part of a broader partnership amongst UNICEF, the Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation and the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya  to promote key high impact interventions for maternal and child health in Kenya. As part of the initiative, Christian, Muslim and Hindu religious leaders have developed a Handbook for Faith Communities promoting Maternal and Child Health. The initiative will reach all the 8 provinces (47 Counties) and train 27,000 Religious Leaders, through the Religious Coordinating bodies in the Counties.  Each of the trained Religious leaders is expected to inform at least 1,000 congregation members over a three year period. In total, the programme seeks to reach 27 million people.
